Hudson & Hudson - "2 Become Wand" Review

ACT I (The Concise Version)

Alan and Kat Hudson are two very well established comedy magicians who are not only famed for their solo success but as the husband and wife double act who perform as "Hudson & Hudson".

"2 Become Wand" successfully sold out at the Edinburgh Fringe during the Summer. This performance of the show was c/o The Comedy Crate at The Charles Bradlaugh pub in Northampton. A special opportunity for those wanting to catch the show in the Midlands.

Performing to a packed audience, extra seating had to be organised to accommodate everyone. The venue is intimate and all had a good view of this act for a performance of comedy and magic with lots of audience interaction. A close up/parlour show.

The show is hilarious and I was laughing throughout. Alan and Kat talked you through how magic has influenced all facets of their life from meeting, dating, home life, engagement and marriage. A journey accompanied by many unique magic effects that they have devised especially for the show. This is refreshing and unlike some other competing shows.

Both are brilliant performers who can hold their own and together they are a dream to watch. Great banter, jokes and a competitive edge on stage as to who is the best magician. A true magical act.

Audience reaction was good with many wanting to meet Alan and Kat after the show. Highly recommended entertainment and good fun for audience of age 12 upwards.

A must see show. If you love magic, you need to see Hudson & Hudson.

For booking information and websites, details are are the bottom of the page. At time of writing, Hudson & Hudson are appearing in Hull at the end of the month.

ACT II (The Magic Seats Fan Boy Edition)

Quite a few years ago when I first started this site I was lucky to interview Alan Hudson. At the time, Alan and his wife Kat both performed as solo acts before the formation of Hudson & Hudson. As the site was new at the time, Alan was an early interviewee who kindly agreed to answer site questions.

While they both still perform solo, last year they performed their first show as a double act “Married at First Sleight”, which was followed by the latest show “2 Become Wand”. Both shows were performed to sell out audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe.

I had wanted to see Hudson & Hudson (either together or solo) perform for years and watching this show today was a dream come true. This year I promised myself to review and see artists that I have not seen perform live before and I jumped at the opportunity to see this show in Northampton as part of the Comedy Crate. I will be the first to admit I was pretty excited today.

Show time was 2pm for an hour on a Sunday. An unusual time but very convenient for somthing to do on a Sunday. Maybe more shows should run at this time. My family went shopping during the show as they are just not magic enthusiasts like me. I tried my hardest to convince them to join me and I was, of course, right to advise them that they should have attended. I have reiterated that they really need to trust my judgement in future as they missed an amazing show.

Alan and Kat have both appeared on TV on many occasions including BGT and Penn & Teller. In truth, I feel they were both robbed on BGT and I cannot understand why they didn’t go further with their excellent and funny performances. Though they did gain a lot of recognition and they have both also showcased their talents on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Kat more recently and Alan a couple of times which included him fooling Penn & Teller. And as you would expect, Alan likes winding Kat up that he fooled Penn & Teller during the show. We just need a joint Hudson & Hudson TV appearances now for this very funny and magical act.

The Comedy Crate Northampton was the ideal venue for this show with ticket prices that were very reasonable. An absolute bargain for an hour's worth of entertainment and the venue was packed. You could also have a drink while watching.

The show is well scripted and all effects are part of the show for a reason. Jokes are well timed and they are even more funny to see live than they already are on TV. Magic ranging from some very impressive mentalism from Kat (seriously good and on a level I have not seen before) and sleight of hand from Alan. Both taking the mickey out of each other and themselves, not taking themelves seriously in a delightful way. Props to bring the story to life range from rope, playing cards, coins, rings, roses and even eggs to bring their unique magical relationship to life for the audience.

The show features a couple of funny sets of magic to music and audio visual is used well with supporting video occasionally used to help tell the story.

The show is tied up very nicely at the end with some surprises and references to previous events throughout the show.

If you would like to see this show, the good news is that there is another performance on Tuesday the 29th of October at Godber Studio, Hull Truck Theatre. Availability is now low for that show so do move fast to book.

Being that magic fan boy that I am, both Kat and Alan made my day by kindly signing a playing card and agreeing to a selfie for my collection. Thank you both and I have already added these pictures to the collectables pages on this site. I promise that I wont leave it as long to see you perform again.

Hudson & Hudson

When real-life married funny magicians decided to perform a double-act, they thought it would be the perfect combination of fun and tricks. However, their personal-life bickering tends to get in the way of the magic. 'Climaxes ranging from silly to mind-blowing. Two immensely engaging and talented performers' **** (BroadwayBaby.com). 'You fooled us' Penn & Teller. 'Ace. Brilliant. Authentic' (Amanda Holden).
